When you’re here
Getting around
There’s no Uber or ride-share on Hvar, so getting around means the local bus, a rental, a water taxi, or your own two feet. Here’s how each works.

The bus
The town bus stop is in the centre, next to Ribola. A few things worth knowing before you rely on it:
- The timetable is posted behind the stop — easy to miss.
- Buses sometimes leave a couple of minutes early, so arrive with a buffer.
- Tickets are bought on board — cash is safest.
- During roadworks, the Hvar-town bus has at times been diverted to a temporary stop near Plodine. Check for a posted notice if a bus doesn’t show.
Cazmatrans, valid from 13 June 2026. An * means the bus makes a quick inland stop (via Vrbanj), adding about 5 minutes. Always double-check times locally — schedules shift with the season.
Renting a car or ATV
The easiest option by far is to rent right at Fontana reception — they have cars and ATVs, and it saves the trek to a rental desk. Parents found the reception cars the simplest way to do a local two-day rental.
Water taxis & boat trips
- Taxi Boat Jelsa — taxiboatjelsa.eu, around €15 per person.
- Mira Heritage sail (Vrboska) — a boat-trip operator parents shared for runs out to Zečevo and around.
Water-taxi and ATV combinations can also reach further spots like Bol, but the schedules get tight against camp hours, so plan around the 2–9 day.
Day trips
Stari Grad
About 15 minutes west and the island’s big-shopping hub — the hypermarket, DM for organics, and the ferry port. The bus runs there often (fare about €5, cash).
Hvar Town
Around 30 minutes and ~€60 by shuttle from Jelsa (cheaper, ~15 min and ~€30, from Stari Grad). More restaurants and shops, plus the Müller store.
Bol & Zlatni Rat (Brač)
The famous beach on the next island, reachable by ferry (Krilo or Jadrolinija) or a water-taxi combo. One family made it work — just mind the ferry times against camp.
Zečevo
A tiny uninhabited islet by water taxi, where Field School takes the younger kids for a “forest school” day. A lovely, low-key boat outing.
